News division all-hands meeting

Please make sure to mark your calendar for the News Division all-hands meeting on Aug. 19 at 2 p.m. ET, where we will focus on our diversity and inclusion initiatives and unveil important next steps for the division.

We’ll discuss the diversity census that will soon be released internally and externally, along with our pronounced goal and timeline for ensuring we reflect our communities. We know we have work to do, and it’s important that we are explicit in stating where we are and how we will get to where we need to be. As part of that, we’ll touch on our hiring process, as well as the hiring efforts we’ve made this year. Our news division has had a mandate for several years that we consider a diverse pool of candidates for every opening, and that has carried over to the full division post-merger.

In addition, I’ll talk about some of the priorities around our important equality and social justice coverage. Our newsrooms already have reassigned beats, embarked on significant projects and restructured in ways that will add more firepower to this work –– but there’s more we can and should be doing.
